02 Oct Speech Therapy for Down syndrome
Everybody wants and needs to be heard and understood. Speech Therapy has been amazing for us in heading toward achieving that goal. Ariel was pretty much non verbal when we had our first visit to Kokila Sarat back in Feb 2017. Kokila, or Koki, is the director/speech pathologist at Therapy Bubbles and I instantly liked her. She is friendly, confident and also a mother. She is also no nonsense which is great for Ariel who can be very strong willed and by strong willed I mean stubborn. Since starting speech therapy with Koki, not only has her speech improved but her focus and ability to follow direction.
Speech and Language skills
Prior to speech therapy we used key word sign language and I did a blog on it. Since starting Speech therapy Ariel can now use 2 and 3 word sentences. Having this skill cuts out so much of the frustration and behaviour issues. Her confidence has also improved and she is now using her big voice. She clearly loves her sessions with Koki. I attended the last one with her and was surprised to see her take her seat, straighten her back and wait for direction.
Ariel loves to talk. She is so proud of herself when she communicates with me this way. I am so proud of Ariel.
Although significant progress has been made Ariel is still below the normal range for her age. Ariel does now however show a great interest in spoken communication and we predict even greater progress with more speech therapy.
Ariels current spoken word
Anyone in Sydney looking for a speech therapist I highly recommend Kokila. She visits preschool to work alongside the educators in improving skills or you can visit her in Meadowbank.
