Down Syndrome and Milestones

I have been a bad blogger but I have been wearing my busy badge (of honour) lately.. Anyway thought I would do a quick post to share a few things about my little Ariel since she is so popular 🙂

As you know she has Down Syndrome. I did not know a thing about DS prior to having Ariel. We started early intervention with LifeStart as soon as we could and I am so glad we did! We have our wonderful occupational therapist visit us fortnightly to make sure our gorgeous girl reaches her milestones. Here is a chart on milestones for babies. It compares the typical baby to the baby with DS. downs3

Ariel is 5 and a half months old and she is doing really well, aside for her neck control. She has very low muscle tone so we have had extra exercises to do with her daily. She can roll over and doesn’t mind doing tummy time but she can’t hold her head up very well and doesn’t really like sitting. I have been working on her sitting though and we sing and laugh so she is improving and I am very proud of her. She loves her rattle and follows it, reaches for it and pays with it. BIG SMILE! She started babbling a little a while ago but yesterday was a real chatterbox… so much fun. (love her..!!). Trying to teach her Mama and Dada and we are also starting with sign language. Here is her gorgeous smile I caught on camera one day when we were taking selfies. I feel like I have reached a few milestones myself since Ariel. Better late than never 😉
